<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
It was spring again. Tarú, the
mosquito was looking forward to it. No sooner did he feel the first waft of the
warm wind, he set out for the country of Miyu, the man. Out of the thick
vegetation, amidst the chirps of the birds and hum of the bees, ignoring the
crouching leopard and the barking deer, Tarú flied towards the hills.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He did not pause to admire the opening
buds of spring on the flowering trees or the sprouting fresh leaves. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
At the usual resting place, the
Nyatù, Taru sat down on a twig of a dried plant. He longingly looked towards
the plateau, expecting his ally any time. Tapiñ, the ice, was his ally in their
fight against Miyu. There was a puff of cold air, and sure enough, Tapiñ came
floating with the northern wind.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“Good to see you, my friend!”
Tarú greeted gleefully.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“Good to see you, friend!” Tapiñ
did not look very happy.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“How was your adventure this
time?” Tarú asked with curiosity.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“Tough as usual,” Tapiñ said.
“Miyu is as clever as ever.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“Tell me, friend,” Tarú said.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“At his home, Miyù kept me away
with the ever glowing fire in the hearth,” Tapiñ narrated. “He protected
himself with thick quilts when he slept.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“What about your plan to attack
him outside his home and by the village well?”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“He is always well protected even
outside his home. He keeps his body covered with thick cloths which I cannot
penetrate. In the fields and forests, he keeps me away with the incessant
movement of his limbs which keep him warm.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“Let us not lose heart,” Tarú
said. “This time I will certainly finish him.”</div>

<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
It was autumn again and was
already getting cold at night. Soon, winter will set in and the chill will be
unbearable. Tarú, the mosquito sat crouching on the thatched roof of the house.
He hated this house, but now it was providing him some warmth. It was time to
leave this country - the country of Miyù, the man.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Early next morning, Tarú started
its long journey back to its own country. The adventure for this season was
over. He glided down the knitted bamboo wall, across the front veranda and into
the narrow lane. Some early risers were already heading towards their fields.
The humans in this part of the country never ceased to work. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
As Tarú flew out of the village,
he glanced back, thinking “I will be back.” </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
As the first rays of the sun penetrated
the thick mists and touched the drying paddy stumps in the vast expanse of
fields, he had reached the periphery of the valley. As he flew higher up above
the pine trees, he could not help but admire the meandering streams flowing out
of the hills and tantalizing paths leading to the woods. He felt a wave of envy
passing through him. Miyù had set up such an orderly life. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Flying higher up, Tarú could see
the familiar resting place, the Nyatù on the ridge of the mountain. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
As he came
nearer, he felt a waft of cold air and saw Tapiñ, the ice. They had been allies
as long as they could remember.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>They had decided to join hands in their struggle against Miyù. Tarú
would attack Miyú in summer and Tapiñ in winter. As long as they could
remember, they crossed path twice in a year – once in the autumn and the other
in spring. Those were the occasions they would meet at the Nyatù and exchange
words.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“Hey, my friend!” Tapiñ called
out. “Good to see you!”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“Good to see you, my friend,”
Tarú said with an air of despondency. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“You don’t look too happy,” Tapiñ
said. “How have your expedition been this time?”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“As usual,” Tarú told
despondently. “I tried my best but Miyù prevailed again.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“Let us not lose heart,” Tapiñ
tried to cheer him up. “Tell me all about it.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>“As per our plan, I took the responsibility of attacking Miyú
in summer. Since the last spring, I had been following Miyù wherever he goes. I
have followed him to the fields and forests where he works. I tried to attack
him when he is busy working, but as soon as I reach his skin, he swats with his
palm. Even the humming sounds of my flapping wings alarm him. He is too agile!”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“But he must rest sometimes!”
cried Tapiñ.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“Yes, he does,” Tarú tells. “Even
in rest, he is always alert. I cannot attack him. At night when he sleeps he
wraps himself in thick layers of cloths. I prod him with spears, but to no
avail. My spear - the proboscis, is too short. Miyù is too clever!”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>“However clever he may be,” Tapiñ said. “I will finish him
this time!”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“I could not defeat him with my
long spears and short spears. I could not kill him with all the poisons I
have,” Tarú said. “You are formless and without weapon. I am afraid you may not
be able to do much.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“I will wait for him in front of
his house and attack him with my chilly bites when he comes out,” Tapiñ said.
“I will attack him at the village well when he comes to collect water. I will
numb his limbs in the fields and freeze him to death in the forests where he
works.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
“I wish you could!” Tarú said.
“May you succeed where I failed!.”</div>

The Apatani Alphabet or <i>Tanw Kennanw</i> saw the light of the
day when its first chart was released simultaneously at Supuñ Dree and Hong
Dree at Ziro on July 5, 2015 by Dr. Hage Lodor, President, Tanw Supuñ Dùukuñ
(TSD) and Bamang Felix, Parliamentary Secretary (Education), Government of
Arunachal Pradesh respectively.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Apatani language was written using Devanagair Script in
the 1960s but later, Roman letters became more popularly used to write the
language. Early writers struggled with the problem of representing some sounds
which are specific to Apatani and are not available either in Roman or
Devanagari script. For a long time, individual authors followed their own
innovations to address this issue. As a result, however, there was no
uniformity in how the words were spelt.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In view of this, the Apatani Cultural and Literary Society
(ACLS) organized a symposium at Ziro to standardize the writing in Apatani.
Two-days deliberations resulted in a recommendation which has been followed for
more than a decade. In the meantime, the Apatani was approved by the Government
of Arunachal Pradesh to be taught as the third languages in the schools of Ziro
valley. The primer for teaching the middle classes were prepared by the Popi
Sarmiñ Society (PSS) using the recommendations of the ACLS symposium.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
With the advent of social networking sites, many youngsters
attempted communication in Apatani. Sure enough, they felt the need to review
the 1997 ACLS recommendation to make the writing more accurate. In 2012,
NgunuZiro and the Apatani Teachers’ Welfare Forum (ATWF) collaborated to
organize a workshop to explore means to improve teaching of Apatani in the
schools of Ziro.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Of the many
recommendations, one of them was to constitute a language development committee
to review the 1997 ACLS script. The task was entrusted to the ACLS.
Accordingly, the ACLS constituted the Apatani Language Development Committee
(ALDC) in August 2013. The mandate of the ALDC was to review the 1997 ACLS
script and submit the report in a year’s time. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After a year-long discussions and study, the ALDC submitted
the report in a public workshop organized by the ALCS on November 30, 2014. The
participants recommended that the ACLS accept the report, study it and give
their opinion within two months. The ACLS gave technical approval to ALDC
recommended script on January 12, 2015 and forwarded it to the Tanw Supuñ Dùukuñ
(TSD), the apex body of the Apatanis, for administrative approval. The TSD gave
the formal administrative approval and entrusted the task of promoting the
script and the Apatani language to the ACLS.</div>

A: It is because it is not widely used for daily
communication. Many of the young Apatani people are not able to speak their own
language properly. Even elders have to depend on English for most communication
(the one you are reading now is an example!!). </div>

<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
A: Elder people do mostly use Apatani in spoken communication.
But almost none is seen using it for written communication.</div>

<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
A: Because it is very difficult to write in Apatani in the
absence of a script of its own. For the same reason, it is very difficult to
read the language written using the English alphabet.</div>

<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
A: Because we use the English alphabet to write in Apatani. As
all the Apatani sounds are not available in English, the English alphabet do not
have all the letters needed to write the Apatani words. So, it cannot be
written as accurately as it is spoken by the native speakers.</div>

<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Q: Why is it difficult
to read Apatani though everybody is so comfortable reading foreign languages
like English?<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br />
A: We all are educated in English medium schools. So, when we read English, we
basically read the “words”. That means, when we see the word “emancipation”,
for example, we can immediately read out aloud “emancipation” because we are
already familiar with the spelling and our mind recognizes the word. We don’t
have to look at all the letters – e, m, a, n, c, i, p, a, t, i, o and n
separately; we look at the word “emancipation” as a single unit and immediately
recognize it. <span style="background: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13.5pt;">When we see the word "church" we immediately read </span><span style="background: white; color: #141823; font-family: "Devanagari Sangam MN"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Devanagari Sangam MN";">चर्च</span><span style="background: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13.5pt;">,
but when we see "chemist" we read </span><span style="background: white; color: #141823; font-family: "Devanagari Sangam MN"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Devanagari Sangam MN";">केिमस्त</span><span style="background: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13.5pt;"> not </span><span style="background: white; color: #141823; font-family: "Devanagari Sangam MN"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Devanagari Sangam MN";">चेिमस्त</span><span style="background: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13.5pt;">.
It is because we are already familiar with each of these two words.<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span></span>However, those who are just
starting to learn English have to look at each letter separately. They have to
see “e-man-cipa-tion” and then only read “emancipation”.<br />
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--><br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />
<!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 10.0pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
When we read Apatani, we are always like the beginners –
starting with letters, syllable and then only the word is read. It is because
Apatani language still don’t have standard<span style="font-family: "Devanagari Sangam MN"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Devanagari Sangam MN";">ised</span> spellings for their words.
To write, “year” for example, I may write “anyañ”; you may write “anyang” and
somebody else may write “aniang”. So, we cannot look at the “word” as we do
when reading English, but we have to look at it letter by letter and then only
we form the word. Therefore, it is cumbersome every time we try to read what is
written in Apatani.</div>

<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
A: Because we don’t have an Apatani Alphabet.<br />
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--><br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />
<!--[endif]--></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">

<!--[endif]--></b></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
A: We can, but as pointed out earlier, we cannot write Apatani
language accurately using English alphabet. In such situation, everybody will
continue to spell a word as she/he wishes and so, no standard spelling can be
developed for any word. If somebody write “amee” for “ami” or “amoo” for “amu”
they seem right because they are right as per the rules of English phonetics.
Similarly, I may write “apu” for arrow in one page and “afu” in the next page.
Though both would be right as per the rules of English phonetics, it creates
confusion.</div>

language?<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">

<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">

<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Q: And, having a

standard spellings?<br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />

<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Q: So, why can’t we
have a distinct Apatani Alphabet then?<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br />
A: We sure can. We’ll have to modify the existing Roman letters a bit to suit
our needs. It is because there are letters in the English alphabet representing
sounds we don’t have, whereas there are no letters to represent some sounds we
need. And we should open up our mind to accept those minor modifications.</div>

A: Yes, many young Apatanis realized that Apatani cannot be
written accurately using English alphabet. When such views were shared in the
social network sites like Facebook some four to five years back, the Apatani
Cultural and Literary Society (ACLS) took note and constituted the Apatani
Language Development Committee (ALDC) in August 2013. The mandate of the ALDC
was to review the present writing system of the Apatanis, explore ways to more
accurate writings and make necessary recommendations. The ALDC submitted its
report in a language workshop organized by ACLS on November 30, 2014.
Subsequently, the ACLS gave technical approval to the recommendation and the
Tanw Supuñ Dukuñ (TSD) gave administrative approval. </div>

<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
A: ALDC recommended an Apatani Alphabet using Modified Roman
Script (MRS). It also recommends various follow up steps to develop Apatani as
a language.</div>

<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Q: What modifications
of the Roman script is recommended by the ALDC?<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
A: The ALDC recommendation is made with the objectives of
keeping the writing system simple, user-friendly and consistent. So, attempt is
made to retain as many letters of English Alphabet as possible without
modification since all educated people are familiar with English. But some
modification in usage is suggested for letters which are not needed to write in
Apatani. In addition, two additional characters, needed to write in Apatani,
are suggested.</div>

additional characters?<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br />
A: First is a symbol to signify glottal stop which is a prominent feature in
Apatani language. Apostrophe (‘) after the syllable on which glottal stop is
identified is suggested. This is selected because it is available on any
keyboard and not needed to write Apatani. Examples of glottal stop are tako’
(dirt), la’ko (button), paro’ (hen).</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
The second symbol is (–ñ) to signify nasalization of a vowel
preceding it. This is selected because it has already been in use since late
1990s when some Apatani writers started using it and ACLS formalized its use in
a symposium in 1997. Examples of its usage are yasañ (fuel), takuñ (peach),
paiñ (liver).</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">

<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Q: How many vowels are
there in the proposed Apatani Alphabet?<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
A: Seven vowels. A, e, i, o and u are used as in English. In
addition, v replaces <u>e</u> (ACLS, 1997) and w replaces ii (ACLS, 1997).</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><br />
Q: Many people are more comfortable using <u>e</u> and ii. Why is it necessary
to replace them?<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br />
A: Vowel <u>e</u> is replaced because it is cumbersome to type it in mobile
handsets and tablets. In addition, the underlined symbol gets lost when a word
or a sentence has to be actually underlined. And v is not needed in Apatani and
available in all types of keyboards.</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
Vowel ii is replaced because vowel lengths have to be
addressed and use of double vowels to represent vowel lengths are most
promising. So, we will have to write “aato” (come) in contrast with “ato”
(owner). Similarly we can write “twwrw (forehead) in contrast to “twko”
(money). If we retain “ii”, we would have to write “tiiiirii” (forehead), which
does not look good. Even for words like fish, for example, we would have to
write “Ngiii”. As with v, w is not needed to write in Apatani and so its usage
is modified as it is available in all types of keyboards.</div>

c, f, q, x and z are not needed to write in Apatani and they are already
available in all kinds of keyboards. In addition, there is something called
gemination which means consonant lengths. For consonant length also, we have to
write double consonants. For example, if we have to write the word for fish
trap, we will write “taxxu</span><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">ñ”.

<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Q: Once we formally
adopt the Apatani Alphabet, what are the next steps to develop the language?<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br />
A: Yes, the first step is to have a set of letters with names and arranged in a
particular order. That will be the Apatani Alphabet. Once we have that, more
difficult but important tasks lay ahead:</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
1. We have to work on tones as Apatani is a tonal language.
ALDC has identified seven tones in Apatani but of the opinion that three tones
need to be represented. </div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
2. Work out a guidelines for identifying word boundaries.</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
3. Standardize spellings of as many Apatani words as possible.
The issue of vowel lengths and gemination will come up at this stage. One major
challenge at this stage would be to address the issue of difference in accents
in different village clusters. We have distinct accents among Hong, Hari,
Bulla, Hija, Dutta and Bamin Michi/Mudang Tage clusters.</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
4. Develop a lexicon using the words whose spellings have been
standardized.</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
5. Develop various learning aids so that the standardized
words are used as frequently as possible. This will be followed by Apatani
literature, the quality of which will determine how popular the language can be
made.</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Q. What makes the
present proposal special?<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
A: If the present recommendation of the ALDC is accepted, the
Apatanis will have an Apatani Alphabet with following features:</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
1. Simple and user-friendly, with no diacritics. All the
letters are available in all kinds of typewriters.</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpMiddle" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">
2. It utilizes all the letters in English alphabet. It is
important because if we leave out some letters, they are susceptible to be
inadvertently misused. For example, if we leave out f, it may be used in place
of p. That will hinder standardization of spellings.</div>
<div class="MsoNoteLevel1CxSpLast" style="margin-left: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; text-indent: 0in;">

It was the year 2000. My friend, Omak Apang, was the Union Minister of State (Tourism), Government of India. He took the initiative to propose Ziro as a World Heritage Site. A meeting of community leaders was arranged in the Hotel Blue Pine at Ziro to discuss about the proposal. All of us present in the meeting opposed the proposal on the ground that this is a conspiracy to keep Ziro as a 'museum piece'. We were under the impression that recognition as heritage site means full stop to development.<br />
<br />
In the following years, a UNESCO-funded research project was carried out in Arunachal Pradesh and the Apatanis, the inhabitants of Ziro was one of the subjects. This created a lot of international attention. A presentation of this project was organized in 2008 in NERIST, Itanagar. One of the recommendations of the project was to enlist Ziro as a World Heritage Site. A renewed interest was created. There was a feeble attempt to initiate the application process, but it never took off.<br />
<br />
In late 2012, there was a newspaper report about a workshop in Guwahati in which Ziro was shortlisted as a potential World Heritage Site among many sites in the north-east India. A Facebook discussion on the topic resulted in a loose group of volunteers who took interest in pushing the initiative forward. A hectic follow up of the process ensued. The volunteers prodded a sluggish system to submit the proposal in time. This was followed by a visit of Ziro and Talle Valley by a team from the Department of Cultural Affairs, led by the Secretary and the Director in January 2013.<br />
<br />
By late 2013, we came to know for sure that Ziro has been shortlisted for the Tentative List. This finally was confirmed when a team from the Advisory Committee on World Heritage Matters (ACWHM) visited Ziro in February 2014. A presentation of the site was made and they were taken around the area. It was a successful visit. The result was drawing up of a tentative roadmap to take Ziro to the coveted WHS. We reviewed the initial proposal as per the inputs from the ACWHM members and submitted it to the concerned authority in time.<br />
<br />
On April 14, 2014, the <span id="goog_426843362"></span>Apatani Cultural Landscape<span id="goog_426843363"></span> appeared as a Tentative List of India in the <a href="http://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5893/" target="_blank">UNESCO's website</a>. Ziro is in the Tentative List now but it is to be seen if the Government of Arunachal Pradesh takes a proactive role in preparing the arduous task of dossier preparation and the volunteers who have been pushing the project till now can hold themselves together. In addition, ACWHM members pointed out to many aspects that need to be reversed and others that need to be taken up to meet the global standard to qualify a place as a heritage site.<br />
<br />
Fingers crossed, hoping that developments in the coming days will be positive.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 22pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Ami Nwdo Bwnyi was the most beautiful woman of her time. She was also the most virtuous and skillful. She excelled in the art of weaving and making intricate designs; she was expert in cultivation and other household works. So immersed was she in her daily works that she did not have time to enjoy life.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 22pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">One fine morning, she suddenly realized that all her friends have been married off and she is getting past her age for marriage. She got worried and decided to consult the God for advice.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 22pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">“I have lived a virtuous life and have been a good daughter to my parent and a good sister to my brothers. But alas! I have remained unmarried while all my friends are enjoying their conjugal life,” Ami Nwdo Bwnyi said. “I wish to get married too and lead a normal life of a woman. But I am getting old and my beauty is deserting me. Pray, my God, advise me.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 22pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">“Your life will not go in vain,” the God said. “You will get the best husband on earth.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 22pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">“I am getting old and no longer pretty,” Ami Nwdo Bwnyi asked sadly. “Who will marry me now?” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 22pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">“I will tell you the secret of remaining ever youthful,” God said. “<i>Twpe</i> on your face, <i>hulo</i> on your nose and <i>huxo</i> with <i>rutiñ yarañ</i> on your ear will keep your beauty and youth for ever.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 22pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Ami Nwdo Bwnyi got her nose and ear lobes pierced and put on <i>yapiñ hulo</i> and <i>yaru huxo</i>. She further decorated her ears with <i>rutiñ yarañ</i>. She then <a href="http://ziminziro.blogspot.in/2010/06/tiipe-body-art.html#comment-form" target="_blank">tattooed her face</a>, the design of which was copied from that found in the pine trees.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia; font-size: 15.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Georgia;">Ami Nwdo Bwnyi and
Mwdo Jiñdo Tajiñ got married. They gave birth to various <i>xalo</i>s – the races of
the world. They were able to raise lots of livestock’s which are the birds and
wild animals that we see today. Pine trees, which inspired the facial tattoo
design is considered sacred by the Apatanis.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

Among the <i>rañtw</i>s, Hari Rañtw is the best known for its magnificent trees which are named after the women who are believed to have planted them. Less known, but no less grand, is the Kalung Rañtw.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHNWYJ5G8Fd6HAR7exdgWOesyEUTxEl7-jhYZayA6jiO1brtg_yZjIJcjsdDgxblocxniYafKh9Ox37_0aQ4hVWGl5UnUip-FMbGyv5wHmA38TGYTmoaIAgxm8mFuP2kLpT3ycoO7zWPU/s1600/IMG_4400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHNWYJ5G8Fd6HAR7exdgWOesyEUTxEl7-jhYZayA6jiO1brtg_yZjIJcjsdDgxblocxniYafKh9Ox37_0aQ4hVWGl5UnUip-FMbGyv5wHmA38TGYTmoaIAgxm8mFuP2kLpT3ycoO7zWPU/s400/IMG_4400.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
A special feature about the Kalung Rañtw is the fact that a shed at the site of the traditional <i>nyatu</i> - resting place, had been inaugurated by Kuru Hassang in 1998. The <i>rañtw</i>, most probably, has the biggest area and best maintained of all the village sacred groves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf5lUPuj3jRLJUytxCuYnCwNCUQnw6iZaNGxaQTjjQe_NyS-z4Km3MJtwEg5_c-P4fjoEMiSruXvdjePWuM5aRRAUf24MHrgSMed8jgt97UJAlYjHR0VVDH66ky8OzZzPXhJmt8a1q5Qc/s1600/IMG_4424.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf5lUPuj3jRLJUytxCuYnCwNCUQnw6iZaNGxaQTjjQe_NyS-z4Km3MJtwEg5_c-P4fjoEMiSruXvdjePWuM5aRRAUf24MHrgSMed8jgt97UJAlYjHR0VVDH66ky8OzZzPXhJmt8a1q5Qc/s320/IMG_4424.jpg" width="178" /></a></div>
<br />
The boundary is well demarcated with iron or concrete posts to prevent any encroachment attempts. Apart from magnificent blue pine trees, sacred trees include a wide varieties of other trees as well. The look of the sacred forest reminds one of Frost's verse, "The woods are lovely, dark and deep...."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioZV6H2gRuTBLfdjUJvDS4uUeIJt3PUdChV4CtDQ8YKZ3xB46Vrpk84ayUDJ8uD_bq05OtYgok6U0IPhoNDMyA77EabGPv5HPjhnk9BTo89QckFnklUeZ6QPdOqoVq9x8kXRJ_Mm7cZEw/s1600/IMG_4406.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="186" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioZV6H2gRuTBLfdjUJvDS4uUeIJt3PUdChV4CtDQ8YKZ3xB46Vrpk84ayUDJ8uD_bq05OtYgok6U0IPhoNDMyA77EabGPv5HPjhnk9BTo89QckFnklUeZ6QPdOqoVq9x8kXRJ_Mm7cZEw/s320/IMG_4406.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Placid views from the rañtw add charm to the place.<br />

The migration story of the Apatanis unequivocally points to
the fact that they had settled down in Talle Valley before shifting base to
their present habitat at Ziro valley. A team of archaeologists, in fact, had an
extensive survey of Talle valley looking for any evidence of human settlement
with not much success. This is understandable as the tribe had not used any
materials of metal or of stone that usually leave evidences. Since the archaeologists usually look for such remains, they could not find any. What they missed, however, was
the most striking evidence of Apatani settlement any visitor to the valley can
see even to this day. What is that evidence? We'll find out in a while.</div>

I always thought that blue pine at Ziro is native to the

that blue pine is endemic to Ziro. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>

“I don’t think so,” he said. “Overall vegetation here and

I tried to argue against it, but he was so sure about his
theory that I had to revise my own belief. I recalled then that the migration
story of the Apatanis also tells of the tribe coming to the valley with seeds
of pine (<i>pwsa</i>), bamboo (<i>bije</i>) and mustard (<i>giyañ</i>). It was clear, then, that
Ziro valley was once home to broad-leaved evergreen forests and that blue pine
that dominate the landscape today, was planted by the Apatanis when they
settled down here. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
The visitors to Talle Valley are surprised at the vegetation
pattern there – broad-leaved trees in the higher reaches while coniferous
forests of pine and fir dominate the valley. This is the reverse of the
expected pattern. The scientists find themselves at a loss to explain what they
call a unique phenomenon. It is not unique, though: this pattern is found in at
least one other place. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The same so-called reverse vegetation pattern is seen at
Ziro valley which very few people may have noticed. Coniferous vegetation,
mainly of blue pine, dominate the valley while the surrounding hills are covered
with broad-leaved trees. This
pattern is because the Apatanis planted the blue pine in the valley while
broad-leaved trees are native to the area and has remained in the hills.<br />
<br />
It is
not difficult to understand now that the reverse vegetation pattern at Talle
Valley also is result of similar works. When the Apatanis settled down in Talle
valley, they planted psuga pine and fir in the valley while the original broad-leaved
vegetation in the hills around the valley has remained intact. This, then, is
the most striking and strong evidence to scientifically support the Apatani
migration story that they had lived in Talle valley for a very long time before
they shifted to Ziro valley.</div>

Ziro Putu today occupies the center of the Ziro valley. This
is sometimes called the Army Putu as it became the cantonment area of the
Indian Army in the sixties. It is said that the whole troop was killed in the
war for liberation of present Bangladesh in 1972. For a long time after the
soldiers left, it remained an empty hill covered with gentle green grass and fetching
ferns. Some government establishments are being set up these days on the
hillock.</div>

It is one of
the ironies of history that the first settlers – Ziro, Tabyu and Dusu, who

present. Almost all the people of Dusu clan were killed in a conspiracy by the
rest of the Apatanis, but the descendants of a few who escaped to other

In the seventies and eighties, bicycles were the most prestigious mode of local transport at Ziro. Groups of young boys could be seen on their bicycles in colorful dresses, often carrying their girlfriends in front of them. Students would paddle their way to their schools at Hapoli from far away villages like Bulla or Hija. School compounds were full of bicycles. So were the office complexes. Bicycles shops were doing good business in the twin towns of Old Ziro and Hapoli.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Popularity of bicycles started waning in the nineties with the advent of two wheelers - first the scooters and later motor bikes. Shops too disappeared one by one. When two wheelers were replaced by motor cars, Ziro was looking like a sinking town.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm6EJTjyVDR7QqkYaC1KKo6s7QdRqN-TAEuLlsUtdWYSQ0Xx6OZBARefeFEYM9qwJ5V1k4okwYlRksMgCIxyzuwFtfb2PwgV0BkepA8BjPjEjfgWd3oyo4tUIOwDA-BtdOJxXFZK9VaKM/s1600/IMG_2101.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm6EJTjyVDR7QqkYaC1KKo6s7QdRqN-TAEuLlsUtdWYSQ0Xx6OZBARefeFEYM9qwJ5V1k4okwYlRksMgCIxyzuwFtfb2PwgV0BkepA8BjPjEjfgWd3oyo4tUIOwDA-BtdOJxXFZK9VaKM/s320/IMG_2101.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
When a group of concerned citizens, under the banner of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NgunuZiro?fref=ts" target="_blank">NgunuZiro</a>, organized a bicycle expedition around the villages of Ziro last August, it elicited enthusiastic response from within Ziro as well as from outside the valley. More than fifty cyclists participated in the expedition and HE the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh sent a special emissary to participate and to convey a message of good will. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ziro looks a happy town again with increasing number of bicyclists and addition of more bicycle shops at Hapoli. One can see people happily paddling around even in the chill of this winter. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NgunuZiro/info" target="_blank">NgunuZiro</a> has mountain bikes for rent for interested visitors to Ziro.<br /><br /></div>

Making a round of the seven original Apatani villages used to be tantamount to making a round of the world. That was the impression during Penw ceremony of Muruñ festival. When such arduous tasks were undertaken, there had to be resting places. One such place was the Peci Putu at Bwrw.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd2E4RriTTCGNjnesT4g2WPPGoALlJJsRrb8dnznHzfQ053TiRnsA8Us7LDp5PZxFZ7IxMy_1RJqDtRnKBjTaTKAeyiAWlqC_61qVs9V1KcXSissGUFKIYzMRoF9ZMMuwOnTfHjAIzJJs/s1600/IMG_1652.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd2E4RriTTCGNjnesT4g2WPPGoALlJJsRrb8dnznHzfQ053TiRnsA8Us7LDp5PZxFZ7IxMy_1RJqDtRnKBjTaTKAeyiAWlqC_61qVs9V1KcXSissGUFKIYzMRoF9ZMMuwOnTfHjAIzJJs/s320/IMG_1652.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was here that the participants in the Penw took rest for some minutes and young men organized high jump competition among themselves. The place is a part of the Supuñ Bwrw where all the Apatanis are said to have settled down upon migration before scattering to their respective villages. Today, the place remains one of the few open spaces owned by the communities. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmZnr-U1U4qOhtN1DySYLfvd4F3yCghuKaveDjsY_P44zEHfp3DYu9iKAv38u6Sg_6okBOWgOI_EUQDfXkBcGsbBfI2iQJ-AB3-XuwwBE-vUFPMTzoPiPQwObky6z-qDvDDQjuXhQvjwo/s1600/IMG_1676.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmZnr-U1U4qOhtN1DySYLfvd4F3yCghuKaveDjsY_P44zEHfp3DYu9iKAv38u6Sg_6okBOWgOI_EUQDfXkBcGsbBfI2iQJ-AB3-XuwwBE-vUFPMTzoPiPQwObky6z-qDvDDQjuXhQvjwo/s320/IMG_1676.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Except for litters of plastic bottles and wrappers at places discarded by irresponsible picnickers, Peci Putu still presents what one imagines of Ziro, the place. It serves as the grazing ground for cattles and flock of birds can be seen flying around. Colorful butterflies are in their playful best around the groves of trees and by the nearby <i>yorlu</i>s.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxwxW2w1oCPzjTIN6_b-BK75wqtvfEO3XAkgcmbrnIX1SS00c_yrAtc7Z6Ylf7Kw2vGSo7OF-EKhuGyQRCWMmTcnhDSW4zBgRs1frIOOI1W9ehhKiz4ivfqap3tngpM95AYHedW-nkFgY/s1600/IMG_1667.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxwxW2w1oCPzjTIN6_b-BK75wqtvfEO3XAkgcmbrnIX1SS00c_yrAtc7Z6Ylf7Kw2vGSo7OF-EKhuGyQRCWMmTcnhDSW4zBgRs1frIOOI1W9ehhKiz4ivfqap3tngpM95AYHedW-nkFgY/s320/IMG_1667.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Peci Putu is, truly the centre of the Apatani valley. At a short distance can be seen the Hong village (above) and the Hapoli town (below). A little more than a kilometer to the north will take you to Hari via the legendary Dobi where a school has come up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSykzvAYt2EsdEzSQkf1w7FdaUST9RXVGk3Uo5ngaMXN5afV9SecydLwE6jvSyDbqbY9prtO-ddpjFOdHQ15C0BaBCSNH0FIuC6o6qNzYfAfRT2eIugt9N-xP-NADBj24ROQjOkRuqzyQ/s1600/IMG_1668.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="177" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSykzvAYt2EsdEzSQkf1w7FdaUST9RXVGk3Uo5ngaMXN5afV9SecydLwE6jvSyDbqbY9prtO-ddpjFOdHQ15C0BaBCSNH0FIuC6o6qNzYfAfRT2eIugt9N-xP-NADBj24ROQjOkRuqzyQ/s320/IMG_1668.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The play of sun and shade can be enjoyed in all its glory in the paddy fields surrounding it in three sides. Look across towards the main road, and one can have the magnificent view of the Pequ.<br />

This September, a <a href="http://zirofestival.com/" target="_blank">festival of music</a> is planned at Ziro. Appropriately, Peci Putu is the selected venue for the festival. There will be music, food, culture and many things more to enjoy. This, then, is an occasion to visit this beautiful place.<br />

On the way, he saw the deadly Bwhañ Tabu jumping in joy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXyDiZBC2lAFswfaZYQ8TRVJYEnA7xWoMXBGuZGv7j-Mgzy81p3LN7s4S0UEt7VhaDcx7NNc1tHq7vB3o0APzz9ctBkNXniyIRZtp9DRDb16P7tAKZvoVwQxbartUj-zVu9WhR4x-G_Ac/s1600/IMG_1520-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXyDiZBC2lAFswfaZYQ8TRVJYEnA7xWoMXBGuZGv7j-Mgzy81p3LN7s4S0UEt7VhaDcx7NNc1tHq7vB3o0APzz9ctBkNXniyIRZtp9DRDb16P7tAKZvoVwQxbartUj-zVu9WhR4x-G_Ac/s400/IMG_1520-001.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
"What is the occasion, my friend?" Abotani asked.<br />
<br />
"I have done it!" the reptile shouted. "I have killed him with my poison!"<br />
<br />
"Whom did you kill?"<br />
<br />
"Someone with black hair on his head," Bwhañ Tabu told.<br />
<br />
Abotani recalled all the creatures who have black hair on their heads. Suddenly, it dawned on him that it is the humans who have such features. He became worried. If this goes on, the future of mankind was bleak. He had to do something.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr52726J-BIUkAZI4Ho4kXdBmZ53SILx179vpd6EohbuI7WulPjb4nerS6jExdPlEsbqxbMpo7469HEuhmfxA3SjCFTeReknWDkiXTw395ArpVdgpCgEMN1UrPOq-HrykStNlTyYT6YSI/s1600/IMG_1522-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="255" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr52726J-BIUkAZI4Ho4kXdBmZ53SILx179vpd6EohbuI7WulPjb4nerS6jExdPlEsbqxbMpo7469HEuhmfxA3SjCFTeReknWDkiXTw395ArpVdgpCgEMN1UrPOq-HrykStNlTyYT6YSI/s400/IMG_1522-001.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
"Oh, I am sorry but you are celebrating in vain," Abotani told the <i>tabu</i>. "The one you bit is sitting in the sun with beautiful cloths and his hair neatly combed. I have come that way and saw him myself."<br />
<br />
Bwhañ Tabu was shocked. He was disappointed with himself.<br />
<br />
"What use is my poison," he thought, "if it cannot kill a creature!"<br />
<br />
So saying, he spat out all of the poison he had at Supuñ Lañta. It was from that day onwards that the once-poisonous Bwhañ is harmless today.<br />
<br />
Other small creatures like the bee, ants, etc. helped themselves with the poison that the <i>tabu</i> had spat out. That is how they got the poisons they have!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10959531979229133911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057956990745696774.post-83071402299035095972012-07-09T13:14:00.000+05:302012-07-09T13:14:15.505+05:30Towards a Zero-Waste Ziro<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the last one year or two, lots of activities to promote tourism are being carried out at Ziro. There has been summer festivals since three years now, initially to coincide with the Independence Day celebration, but this year with the Dree festival of the Apatanis. A number of resorts and home stays have come up. Then there has been a series of workshop exploring the tourism potential in the area. A notable issue in all these discussions has been the growing menace of garbage in the town. As a response to this concern, the District Administration organized a workshop on integrated solid waste management in collaboration with Ngunu Ziro, a non-governmental organization. A proposal to introduce the concept of zero-waste was mooted and is being carried forward now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The District Administration has acquired a plot of land in the south-eastern corner of the town, measuring 20,000 sq. m for Burial-cum-Cremation Ground and 1,000 sq. m for Resource Recovery Park. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbBWPREfSCYeqPm-50Oea5ouI5_SN1_TGvMuRgp_3_Nha9xFiasPYQjuFIA3hTHTlDw2U_oBebpoIFZiMh8LZNSVxCS6XP4fuRWFxiN3mWMIBdSG2FnuwE3xchbS_yf8ERUDDG7UHsJ9Y/s1600/Slide5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbBWPREfSCYeqPm-50Oea5ouI5_SN1_TGvMuRgp_3_Nha9xFiasPYQjuFIA3hTHTlDw2U_oBebpoIFZiMh8LZNSVxCS6XP4fuRWFxiN3mWMIBdSG2FnuwE3xchbS_yf8ERUDDG7UHsJ9Y/s320/Slide5.jpg" width="220" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The 2 km approach road to the Burial-cum-Cremation Ground has already been completed. The Resource Recovery Park (RRP) is proposed midway to the site at 1.1 km from the Swro-Manwpolyañ road. It will initially have facilities for secondary segregation of non-biodegradable discards and recycling of paper wastes. Basic recycling of plastic waste also is proposed as far as feasible locally, but most bulk will be shredded and sent to bigger recycling centers for further processing.</div>

It is hoped that this project will have the desired effect and help maintain Ziro as it is till now. <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 16.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13pt;">Some years are more
eventful than others. The year 1960 was such a year. The most important event
of the year was shifting of the headquarters from present Old Ziro to Hapoli.
We saw in a <a href="http://friends-of-ziro.blogspot.in/2008/12/old-ziro-little-history.html" target="_blank">previous post</a> that the headquarters of Subansiri Division was shifted
from Kimin to Ziro eight years back when it was inaugurated by Shri R.G.
Menzies on 24th March, 1952. It was B. S. Duggal, Political Officer, who
established the Hapoli township which became the official headquarters.
However, the name Ziro was retained. Hence, Ziro today is understood to
comprise of Old Ziro and Hapoli.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 16.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13pt;">The year also saw the
most devastating fire accidents ever recorded in the Apatani villages – not one
but three villages were almost completely burnt down. Three hundred houses and
forty granaries in Hija village on May 1, 1960 were burnt down immediately
followed by another one in Dutta village on May 12. A little more than two
months later, fifty seven houses in Tajang village was burnt down on August 3,
1960. As an offshoot of such frequent accidents, a number of new villages
sprung up – Lempia out of Tajang village, Diko Pwta (Swro) out of Hong, Swbe
out of Bamin-Michi.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 16.0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13pt;">On a positive note, B.
S. Duggal led team to <a href="http://friends-of-ziro.blogspot.in/2008/02/talley-valley.html" target="_blank">Talley Valley </a>for the first time in May, 1960. The team
identified more than half a dozen species of rhododendron in the valley. They also
noted that orchids and medicinal plants are plentiful. <o:p></o:p></span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10959531979229133911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057956990745696774.post-82190754948534675452012-05-11T11:18:00.003+05:302012-05-11T21:59:52.542+05:30Hapoli Street - Now & Then<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

One is during harvesting of paddy in September-October when the crops have to be safely in the granaries in the narrow window after they have ripen but before they fall off. The other occasion is now when the paddy saplings have to be transplanted in the fields from the nurseries before they grow too big.<br />
<br />
Much water has flowed down the Kle river in the last fifty years, but little has changed as far as agricultural practices of the Apatanis is concerned. The two pictures below, taken more than fifty years back, could have been shot today!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This time of the year is one of the best times to visit Ziro. Not only is the weather excellent - after the chill of the winter and before warmth of the summer months, but lots of activities can be observed. The hills around the valley are replete with varieties of wild berries and fruits. Irrigated paddy fields present various shades of silver. </div>

It won't be very long these shades of silver give way to carpets of green and then to shades of gold. Welcome to Ziro again! </div>

Beyond the Bwrw leñba lies a vast expanse of land in a sylvan setting. Pine plantations line both sides of the fair-weather road leading right up to the jungle beyond. This, I am tempted to guess, must have been the Supuñ Bwrw, said to be the original settlement of the Apatanis.</div>

As if to lend credence to my guess lies a beautiful open space in the midst of the pine forest. This space is called the Nago Putu. I wonder if this was the site of the Supuñ Nago, but am not able to establish the fact.</div>

Whatever the significance of this place, it is the perfect getaway from the crowded town. In addition, this is a favorite spot for shooting video films and video song albums.<br />

As the meadows of Supyu slowly recedes from our sight, our excitement increases. The hill of ferns give way to thicker forest with varieties of trees. The rustling of dry leaves under our feet is punctuated with occasional call of birds. The forest is less noisy than we expected, though. We are on an exploratory trek to Pepu Cumyu, considered to be one of the highest points at Ziro.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As we tread up slowly, taking in the grandeur of virgin forest, a clear view of Nyime Peñbu range presents itself in all glory. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Though it is sunny today, the weather was gloomy the previous day. We see the resultant snow at several places on our track. It is said that snowfall in this part of the hills is said to be sometimes as thick as a foot. It is not so heavy today.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJAlMHvNxAV7KhYWIKz0JBmmMkJm5iEPolqp9KyzSg3LLRH_VtSykqcv5WCOjK5u2ipGbWmr14GorNuULMexb90BU9eGPRNZyTiCDWWTixH9kAHNdRLNtaoL4LJ898DWkoNtakxtVvwp4/s1600/IMG_1309+w.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJAlMHvNxAV7KhYWIKz0JBmmMkJm5iEPolqp9KyzSg3LLRH_VtSykqcv5WCOjK5u2ipGbWmr14GorNuULMexb90BU9eGPRNZyTiCDWWTixH9kAHNdRLNtaoL4LJ898DWkoNtakxtVvwp4/s400/IMG_1309+w.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As it gets dark, we decide to call it a day and settle down. We are at 6500 ft now. We pitch our tents and start looking for some water to cook. It is not easy to find water at such altitude. However, we somehow manage to locate a small stream nearby, though it was a steep descent to the precipitous valley.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj28N7mQK7megJ9PGRV3V7qPFQ30Bs8uQnamty0sPcSB5DcZe1NgQuT6ANB1nVJYOt38yKGfBPtZ30FoRuIuvKS7Pt_LgdaG2s_TSmjHI-laXfrLVX0idFnnBC9UW3lzTBpU32KJcnhgyU/s1600/IMG_1349+w.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj28N7mQK7megJ9PGRV3V7qPFQ30Bs8uQnamty0sPcSB5DcZe1NgQuT6ANB1nVJYOt38yKGfBPtZ30FoRuIuvKS7Pt_LgdaG2s_TSmjHI-laXfrLVX0idFnnBC9UW3lzTBpU32KJcnhgyU/s400/IMG_1349+w.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Early next morning, we climb further to Pepu Cumyu (Cyume Nyatu) with great anticipation. It is at 7200 ft. It looks almost dark even at 6.00 AM. But even at 8.00 AM, the forest is covered with mist. We look towards Ziro, but cannot see anything but white mist engulfing the valley. We cannot wait any longer. Disappointed we start our descent to the camp half an hour later.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Descent back to Ziro valley is faster than we expected. As we come out of the thick forest to the hills of ferns, we are greeted with the view of Ziro - as placid as ever.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit6AIveiiRyNzmIu1uxznCQW2lCy1IyIEaTBpNQRxOo70zzGMdPCKcd6olfqr6Ek5wDa3Dl8RK_Rw9hT4TZnWIdzjetQQmRksxUlAbSe6pDC5GeHDmX8ypn8u5kPEWT-qAGdZKgvM7d5w/s1600/IMG_1368+w.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="233" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit6AIveiiRyNzmIu1uxznCQW2lCy1IyIEaTBpNQRxOo70zzGMdPCKcd6olfqr6Ek5wDa3Dl8RK_Rw9hT4TZnWIdzjetQQmRksxUlAbSe6pDC5GeHDmX8ypn8u5kPEWT-qAGdZKgvM7d5w/s400/IMG_1368+w.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We are disappointed that we could not take any photograph from Cyume Nyatu, but the trek itself is extremely invigorating. This, we decided, could be one of the better trekking routes at Ziro.</div>

The name Nyime Pembu or Lali Gyochi has the status of a mythology among the Apatanis. It is rarely seen from Ziro, where they live and one rarely gets a chance to see it even in photography. This year, however, the weather has been kind and the mysterious mountain revealed itself in full glory (photo below by Hage Gumto).</div>

This snow-covered mountain range is said to be a part of the Gorichen, the highest peak in Arunachal Pradesh and the headwaters of the great Kameng river. More about this peak can be seen <a href="http://www.indianetzone.com/44/gori_chen_peak.htm" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
The name Nyime Pembu features in the migration story of the Apatanis. They are said to have crossed this range while coming from the Wui Supuñ and Wiipyo Supuñ to Anii Supuñ, their present habitat.<br />
<br />
The mountain range is best seen from the Eastern Ring Road near Diib of Hari village. The view of the Ziro valley in the morning is similar to one from <a href="http://friends-of-ziro.blogspot.com/2008/03/dusu-katu.html" target="_blank">Dusu Katu</a> - a lake. The surrounding higher hills get lit up by the rising sun, sparkling up the whites of the snow covering the Nyime Pembu. Welcome to another excellent view point at Ziro!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10959531979229133911noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057956990745696774.post-66534016402214686682011-11-30T22:57:00.001+05:302011-11-30T23:11:15.721+05:30Words and LanguagesI came across one of my old articles on Apatani language, published in Popeerscope, a magazine published by Popi Sarmi<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Cambria; font-size: 16px;">ñ Society in 1998. Here is an excerpt: </span><br />

An Apatani man uses his traditional sword – <i>ilyo</i>, all the
year round. The act of cutting is expressed by various words, depending on the
specific manner of carrying out the action. <i><b>Pa</b></i> is the most common verb to mean
‘to cut’: <i>yasañ <b>pa</b>to</i> (cut the wood). It usually denotes cutting the wood
vertically by bringing the <i>ilyo</i> from above the shoulder. Similar act of cutting with an axe or a spade,
however, is denoted by <i><b>ta</b></i>: <i>yasañ <b>ta</b>to</i> (cut the wood, especially for firewood),
<i>diter <b>ta</b>to</i> (till the land). <b><i>Ta</i></b> is also appropriate even when the <i>ilyo</i> is used
to cut a piece of wood longitudinally to make it fit to be burnt as firewood:
<i>ilyo lo yasañ <b>ta</b>to</i> (cut wood for firewood with <i>ilyo</i>). When the spade is used to
till the land, but the act is accomplished by bringing it from below the
shoulder level, the verb <i><b>o</b></i> is used: <i>balu <b>o</b>to</i> (till the garden).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If a bamboo, for example, is longitudinally split into two
parts, the verb used is <b><i>por</i></b>: <i>bije <b>por</b>to</i> (split the bamoo). But if it is so split
into smaller strips, <b><i>cha</i></b> is used: <i>hiika bije mi <b>cha</b>che to</i> (split that bamboo),
<i>siirañ <b>cha</b>to</i> ((split the log to make it into posts), <i>yaso <b>cha</b>che to</i> (split the
cane). After the whole piece of a cane is split (<i>chache</i>) into smaller strips,
they are shaved with knives to make them ready for use as ropes. The act then
becomes <i><b>gyo</b></i>: <i>yaso <b>gyo</b>to</i> (prepare the ropes by shaving). So, we can say, <i>yaso mi
<b>cha</b>che lala la <b>gyo</b>du </i>(the cane is smoothened to ropes by shaving after
splitting it into fine strips). And if the skin of the bamboo is separated to
use it as a rope, <i><b>lyo</b></i> is used: <i>bimpa <b>lyo</b>to</i> (prepare bamboo ropes). When the
inner portion of a piece of bamboo stick is shaved into several leaves to make
it into a decorative item or for preparation of an altar, the verb <i><b>tii</b></i> is used:
<i>jompu <b>tii</b>to</i> (prepare <i>jompu</i>). If the outside portion of a piece of wood or
bamboo is shaved, the verb used is <i><b>hu</b></i>: <i>siika yakho mi <b>hu</b>meto</i> (trim this stick).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When something is cut by keeping the <i>ilyo</i> or the knife in
close contact with the object and moving the former to and fro as in sawing,
the act becomes <i><b>pi</b></i>: <i>yo <b>pi</b>to</i> (cut the meat), <i>siika yaso mi <b>pi</b>reto</i> (cut this
rope). If an object is cut by keeping the <i>ilyo</i> or the knife in close contact
with it and the sharpened edge facing away from one’s body, <b><i>nya</i></b> is the
appropriate verb: <i>yakho khohe <b>nya</b>to</i> (make a stick), <i>hiika yakho mi <b>nya</b>myuto</i>
(sharpen the point of that stick). Similar act, keeping the sharp edge facing towards
one’s body is <b><i>gya</i></b>: <i>sarse <b>gya</b>to</i> (cut the bunch of millet), <i>iñka yaso mi <b>gya</b>reto</i>
(cut that rope). And to chop is <i><b>tiñ</b></i>: <i>yo pyare <b>ti</b>liñto</i> (chop out a piece of
meat), <i>siika yakho mi <b>tiñ</b>tuto</i> (chop this stick into two).</div>
