Oldest Lapañ

When the Apatanis migrated to the present valley in an unknown past, they are said to have planted the Rantii Piisa that we can see in the Hari Rantii and constructed the first lapañ which is famous today as the Dokañ Lapañ. This lapañ is considered the oldest one in the Apatani valley and is maintained by the Mudo halu of Hari village.

It is a pity, however, that the construction of the lapañ has been modified using iron pipes and concrete posts these days. This could, otherwise, be the right one to be designated the heritage lapang. It is still a significant landmark at Ziro because of the history and mythology associated with it. Welcome to Hari village.

  1. Hi Dr.

Have you ever realised that oldest clans like mudo, puna, dora, lyalang, kyang, pulo etc are becoming fewer and fewer in numbers. Most of the oldest nagos, lapangs and babos are named after these vanishing clans. Think of my clan Dani. It doesnt have a lapang named after its clan. It is kyang lapang which is called as dani lapang now. For that matter Kago clan of Hija uses lyalyang lapang/babo as kago lapang/ babo.
Some research on vanishing clans might be a welcome gesture.

  5. Dear sulu, If am not mistaken Lyalyang clan is Gyuchi whereas Dani is Gyuth. How is it that Lyalyang lapang had been adopted by Dani clan and rechristened as Dani Lapang? Is it feasible as per our tradition? Pleas throw some more insight of the case.

  6. @ wiian. if that is the case, it would be very serious indeed. it think a clan getting extinct would be an exception rather than a rule.

i think dokañ is not a separate clan, but a part of mudo clan. mudañ clan of mudañ-tage village, for example, has mudañ dañdiñ (upper) and dañko (lower). just a speculation. correct if somebody knows better.

@tago. not that i know, but i would guess that should not be a problem. it would be within our tradition for any apatani man to look after his brother's property after the later's demise.

tage clan in tajang village is maintaining the akañ lapañ of tabyu clan. this arrangement is not due to blood relation, though. it is more of convenience.

  7. Kanno&Tago, Lets not confuse the ceding Lapang(of naming)to another clan's name. All what Sulu had to say is that erstwhile Lyalyang Lapang is now Kago Lapang & Kyang Lapang is now Dani Lapang.Seeking to their roots, the polarization of Abotani decendants, however small in number,in Arunachal are getting back to their original clan name which we ought to encourage. There is also a clan called Miri in Hija! Kanno, has Kani Lapang of Hong declared Heritage Lapang ?

  9. Hi, Kanno; seen about Lapangs. Re: EVM tampering, I have commented annonymously citing future use of biometric EPIC card & recent hijacking of development flank. Great to find your, rather our, ZiminZiro.
